From Internship to Qualification: Building Careers Through Guiding
More Than a Tour - A Pathway to Employment
At Bikes ‘n Wines, part of the broader Cape Adventure Brands network, guiding is more than delivering a great experience. It’s a structured pathway into meaningful, long-term employment in tourism.
Our internship programme was built with a clear intention: create real opportunities. Not short-term placements, but practical, skills-based training that leads to professional qualification and permanent roles.
If you’ve followed the journey so far, you’ll have seen how it started
.
Since then, the programme has evolved - and now, we’re seeing the results.
From Learning to Leading
-
The internship is hands-on from day one. It’s built around real experience, working alongside guides, learning the flow of tours, and developing confidence in front of guests.
As we shared in our previous update - growth happens quickly when learning is practical and consistent.
Interns develop skills in:
- Bike preparation and logistics
- Guest interaction and group management
- Storytelling across history, wine, and local culture
- Adapting to different personalities and expectations
Kyle reflects on that progression:
“It’s been an intense 6 months but it made me more confident… learning from other guides and being part of a strong team made a big difference.”
Investing in Qualification - Not Just Experience
-
What sets this programme apart is what happens next.
Once interns successfully complete their training, we invest further - funding their professional guiding qualifications. This step ensures they move forward not just with experience, but with recognised credentials.
It’s a continuation of what we outlined in Building Tourism Careers in Cape Town & the Winelands - creating structured pathways into the tourism industry.
For our guides, this means:
- Increased confidence
- Industry recognition
- Long-term career potential
Real Growth, Real Stories
-
Each guide’s journey reflects a different perspective, but all point to the same outcome: growth through opportunity.
Walter, who was drawn to the outdoors and storytelling, explains:
“I have always enjoyed working outdoors… sharing information about history, culture, geography and attractions.”
Through the internship, that became a refined skill:
“It was a time of learning… perfecting communication skills and learning how to adapt to different guests.”
For Keanan, the experience reshaped how he connects with people:
“Every guest we meet… has their own personality.”
Kyle highlights the importance of adaptability:
“Some guests want to cycle, others want to relax and take photos. Being able to read that is what makes the experience work.”
And for Houston, the impact goes beyond the job itself:
“This opportunity is life changing for me and opened my eyes about what life is.”
Creating Jobs That Last
-
This programme is designed to create continuity.
Rather than hiring externally, we build from within:
- Interns can become qualified guides and from there move into permanent roles
That structure strengthens the team, improves consistency in guest experience, and ensures that every opportunity created has long-term value.
It also means that as the business grows, so does our ability to create more jobs directly through the programme.
Why It Matters
-
Tourism has the potential to create meaningful employment, but only when there’s a clear structure behind it.
By combining:
- Hands-on training
- Financial investment in qualifications
- Real employment opportunities
We’re contributing to a more sustainable tourism model in Cape Town and the Winelands.
Looking Ahead
-
This is just one stage of the journey.
As new interns come through, the cycle continues, creating more opportunities, more qualified guides, and more careers built through experience.
